Jason Carr: Sex & Violence
Crazy Coqs Cabaret, W1F 7ED , [Venue Details]Though the title may conjure memories of punk band The Exploited, Scissor Sisters, and even The Muppets, two-time Tony-nominated orchestrator and composer/lyricist Jason Carr is keen to examine these timeless themes through the song catalogue of classic musicals.
It may not seem the most obvious place to start an exploration of sex (let alone violence), but Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Irving Berlin, and even Rodgers & Hammerstein have lots to say on the subject, not to mention recent Tony Best Musical winner Steven Lutvak and Jason himself.
Often seen at Crazy Coqs as musical director for Maria Friedman, Anne Reid, and many others, Jason’s previous one-man shows, We Kiss in a Shadow and Danger in a Dance, have delighted and engaged audiences with their blend of rich musicality, humour, and deep passion for rediscovering and reimagining the songs of these great writers.
“Jason Carr contributes terrific music and lyrics, with songs that range from the yearningly lyrical to vaudevillian knockabout, with the odd knowing nod to G & S and Sondheim. […] The Water Babies is a treat, and strikes me as that rarest of phenomena—a genuinely successful new British musical.”
